“I want people to actually experience both the artistic looks of it while also realizing that the flavors of the cocktail are going to stand out as something for you to remember,” Perrigo says.

Tom Brown and longtime Passenger bartender Mick Perrigo are running Left Door, a one-room cocktail lounge just off the 14th Street NW strip. The vibe is classy and cozy, with dim lights hanging over the bar, but the prime spot is a table for four in the front window. Cool touches include a wall of doors and the vintage stereo equipment that serves as the bar's sound system.

The bartenders are following all of the mixology rules—the emphatic shakes and swizzles, the ignited lemon peels—but without any of the pretense.

“I like to think of my drinks as being nutritious and delicious,” he says with a smile. His riff off the classic margarita is the cucumber margarita, but it’s not the green vegetable that’s easiest to spot in the drink. After he shakes and pours the cocktail, Perrigo adds three pea-sized drops of Thai basil oil.

“Um, actually,” a Beetlejuice superfan might sneer, “it’s a sandworm from the planet Saturn.” The cozy cocktail bar is jam-packed with fan-friendly details like the sandworm this month, as Left Door celebrates the 1988 Tim Burton ghost story with themed decor, drinks, and events.

I’m here for the cocktail experience. Mick Perrigo, the maestro of this elite mixology program, provides guests with three handcraft specialty cocktails, complemented with ambiance and, according to the website, “unexpected moments.” I have been in the industry for quite a while and frequented a healthy number of bars in D.C. and across the world, so not much is unexpected anymore. Still, I’m intrigued as I sat for this experience during prime time on a Friday night.

To get to The Cocktail Club inside Park View’s Hook Hall, there’s no need to walk the plank. Instead, look for an unassuming wall fashioned from wooden planks inside the subtly pirate-themed spot. When you arrive for your reservation, it swings open to reveal a 15-seat drink den. That’s where you’ll find longtime D.C. bartender Mick Perrigo shaking a prix fixe three-cocktail menu Wednesdays through Sundays.
